Round Two To CBGB Landlord
Wednesday August 31, 2005
The little nightclub in the Bowery that has big name rock stars fighting to keep it from moving has learned its lease will not be renewed. The owner of CBGB, the club that practically gave birth to punk rock in the 70s, has been in a lengthy battle with The Bowery Tenants' Committee over back rent. A court has already ruled that the club can't be evicted because of what it called "a bookeeping error." So, CBGB will stay put while it continues, with the help of folks like E Street Band's Max Weinberg and Little Steven Van Zandt (along with a couple of his Sopranos co-stars) and punk groups Blondie and Public Enemy. "This is not a eulogy," declared CBGB owner Hilly Kristal. "We intend to stay."
