Stones Go South

Monday February 13, 2006
The Rolling Stones' upcoming concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil promises to be an even bigger event than the band's Super Bowl XL halftime show. The Stones will perform a free concert on Saturday (February 18) on Rio's Copacabana Beach, for a crowd expected to exceed a million people.

A free Stones concert in Altamont, California in 1969 was the scene of a riot triggered by security guards (members of the Hell's Angels) attacking members of the audience. One fan was stabbed to death by a security guard who thought the fan had a gun. Rio has one of the world's highest rates of violent crime, and as many as 10,000 uniformed police are expected to be on duty.
