Gilmour To Stones: "Get a Life!"

Thursday June 1, 2006
Okay, let me see if I have this straight. David Gilmour (ex-Pink Floyd) has just turned 60, released a new album, and is on tour. Yet when the London Telegraph asked him to comment on the Rolling Stones' tour schedule and new album output Gilmour said, "Mick [Jagger] and Keith [Richards] should get a life ... I'm a big Stones fan but they haven't done anything that matches their earlier stuff in years."

Ouch! And all this time it has been Roger Waters who has taken heat for not playing nice when talking about his ex-Floyd bandmates!

Gilmour's theory on the Stones' neverending career? "It's like a strange, sexual compulsion. How much do they need? I think a lot of it is the applause. It's a powerful drug, 50,000 people appearing to adore you."

Hey, I don't make this stuff up. Read the whole interview in the London Telegraph ...

Keith Richards may not, in Mr. Gilmour's estimation, have a life, but he does have his doctors' blessings to go back to work, and the Stones have announced that their world tour will resume July 11 in Milan, Italy. The tour has been on hold while Richards recovers from a head injury suffered in an accident while he was on vacation in Fiji. Maybe if he had a life ...

Um… sour grapes, much? Although I’m convinced that the Stones are as awesome as ever, not because of their current music so much, but because they continue to do things like fall out of coconut trees. When was the last time a Death Cab for Cutie or Coldplay member fell out of a coconut tree? Exactly.

Let me pull myself away from DAVID GILMORE’S GREATEST HITS long enough to comment…. PINK FLOYD(and Dave G. for that matter) was, THE STONES still are…I guess this will all blow over when Gilmore opens for Mick n’ da boyz. Coconut trees ROCK !!( dont get me wong ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ is as awesome a set of tunes as you’ll ever find…but Dave…what have you done for me lately)

Pink Floyd is not about money. They turned down a 300 million offer to play. They could’ve easily done it in different tour buses and stuff. And he’s right.. the stones sound horrible these days. At least Gilmour sounds as good as ever.

David Gilmour’s solo album debuted at #1 in the UK, so he is producing new music on his own, not resting on his band’s name as the Stones are doing. While I like both the Stones and Pink Floyd, I am more impressed with Gilmour’s vast philanthropy (more than any other rocker, and he doesn’t crow about for attention like Bono). Gilmour is truly a decent man.

Get A Life ? hey the Stones have life, in fact, they are spending it to the hilt. Where can you find a 60 plus rocker still climbing coconut trees ?

Iam a fan of both the Stones and Pink Floyd.I do still enjoy the stones music, even the new stuff(Bigger bang). Pink Floyd has not put out any thing in years.Dave Gilmour should not be so critical . I am not that impressed with his solo stuff or the last few pink floyd albums.
