Coming Attractions: Upcoming New Releases Of Note
Two Sides of the Moon
Release Date: July 3
Original Who drummer Keith Moon would have turned 60 this year, but his death at age 32 in 1978 put a premature end to a brilliant career. His only solo album, Two Sides of the Moon was released in 1974. Guest musicians included Ringo Starr, David Bowie, Harry Nilsson, Ronnie Wood (Rolling Stones), Joe Walsh, Dick Dale, Steve Cropper and former Turtles Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan in their Flo & Eddie persona. The album is being re-released, with the addition of some previously unreleased outtakes, spoken words and special mixes. It will roughly coincide with the release of the new Who mini-rock opera Wire and Glass featuring the surviving original members of the band, Roger Daltry and Pete Townshend.
Bob Dylan
Modern Times
Release Date: August 29
Columbia Records characterizes Bob Dylan’s 44th album as the third of a trilogy that includes Love and Theft (2001) and 1997’s Time Out of Mind. Dylan sings and plays guitar, harmonica and keyboard, backed by his touring band. Modern Times will feature ten original songs with titles like “Spirit on the Water,” “Thunder on the Mountain” and “Workingman’s Blues.”
The Byrds
There Is a Season
Release Date: August 29
Virtually everything ever recorded by folk rock pioneers, The Byrds, including several previously unreleased recordings, are included on this four-CD, one-DVD box set. The CDs provide a chronological record of the band’s work from 1964 through 1973, plus a 1990 reunion. The DVD features ten rare TV clips from the ‘60s. The project was supervised by original members Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman.
Grand Funk Railroad
Greatest Hits
Release Date: August 15
For several years now, Capitol/EMI has been methodically restoring and re-releasing GFR’s classic Capitol albums. The upcoming CD/DVD Greatest Hits set will include 14 digitally remastered tracks plus several previously unreleased TV and concert performance clips and interviews. GFR is touring this summer with original members Don Brewer (drums/vocals) and bassist Mel Schacher. Original guitarist/vocalist Mark Farner is currently touring and recording as a solo act, with a new album due out on July 4.
Andy Fairweather Low
Sweet Soulful Music
Release Date: August 15
This veteran guitarist is better known for his work in the studio and on tour with Eric Clapton, Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings and Roger Waters than for his own ‘60s and ‘70s groups, Amen Corner and Fair Weather. He recorded several solo albums in the ‘70s and is about to release his first in 26 years. Low was Clapton’s second guitarist for 13 years, and is on the road this summer with Waters’ Dark Side of the Moon Tour. Sweet Soulful Music is produced by Glyn Johns, longtime engineer for the Beatles and Rolling Stones.
