Preview: Gram Parsons CD Box Set and DVD

Sunday June 18, 2006

Before he died of a drug overdose in 1973, Gram Parsons had released one solo album, two as a member of Flying Burrito Brothers, one with the Byrds and one with his first group, The International Submarine Band. His second solo album was released four months after he died, followed over the next 30 years by a live album and a couple of anthologies.

The latest Parsons compilation, The Complete Reprise Sessions is scheduled for a June 20 release. The three-CD set, co-produced by Parsons' former duet partner, Emmylou Harris, includes 16 previously unreleased outtakes from the recording sessions for his two studio albums, Grievous Angel and GP, remastered versions of which comprise the other two CDs in the set.

Coinciding with the release of the Reprise sessions is Gram Parsons: Fallen Angel, a documentary that originally aired on the BBC in 2004, now being made available on DVD in the US. Producer/director Gandulf Henning combined interviews with friends and family with live performance, interview and home movie footage of the late artist. The film follows Parsons from a troubled upbringing as heir to an orange juice company fortune through his short career and lasting influence on the country rock genre.
