For 20 years, from 1978 until 1998 Van Halen reigned as the definitive hard rock band. They almost single-handedly revived the genre and established it in the musical mainstream, garnering critical and commercial success along the way.

The band has offically been on hiatus since 2000, interrupted only by a reunion tour in 2004. This summer, brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen performed together for the first time since that 2004 reunion, band members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony are touring together, and founding member David Lee Roth continues to promote the inevitability of another reunion.
