Journey's New Voice

Thursday December 6, 2007

A couple of things stand out about the announcement of a new lead vocalist for Journey.

First, there's the fact that the artist's name includes a pronunciation guide. There is no photo of the artist. The artist got the job by posting a video on the Web.

Journey's new lead vocalist is none other than Arnel Pineda (that's pronounced "pin-eh-da" in case you have a sudden urge to say it) who, for the past couple of years, has been fronting a Journey cover band in the Philippines (called The Zoo, in case anyone asks) and whose audition consisted of Neal Schon (Journey's guitarist, as you probably already know) catching a video that Pin-eh-da posted on YouTube.

The announcement comes about six months after Jeff Scott Soto ended his six month career as Journey's lead vocalist. This will be the band's third singer in two years, Soto having replaced Steve Augeri in 2006.

Buried at the bottom of the announcement (as it is here) is news that the band is working on a new album which they hope will be released around the middle of 2008.

Hey Dave,

It certainly is something else.
He’s an incredible voice / range, on You Tube you can find him covering not just Journey tracks – although they are the majority … – but Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Survivor, Boston, Stryper, Heart & even Air Supply.

Have to say though, you know, if an American, Englishman or any other nationality individual had posted a mass of their Journey tracks on You Tube, what’s to say they wouldn’t have got the job?!
Another amazing thing is the guy is apparently in his 40’s, yet only looks like he’s in his 20’s or something!
Check him out!

Quite the talent! Shame the sound quality isn’t a little better though.
Cheers & keep on rockin’,

Alun

Yes Mr Dave(that’s pronounced “they’ve” in case for some that’ve a sudden urge to say it) White(the color and always the opposite of black), he has that something JOURNEY veritably demand, and they know more than anyone else, you might want to update and put Arnel “Pi-neh-da” on this page.

Steve Perry had pipes, like Bon Jovi, David Lee Roth, etc. I met Jon Bon Jovi before he was Bon Jovi and Bon Jovi wouldn’t be Bon Jovi without him like Van Halen wasn’t Van Halen without David Lee Roth. Like Genesis wouldn’t be Genesis without Phil Collins. This guy screams, he doesn’t sing. It’s just not going to be the same! Long live the ORIGINAL JOURNEY!

As Arnel Pineda himself said there is one and only one Steve Perry, the Voice. But I’ll listen to the new, reinvigorated Journey, mainly on the new materials. All those guys are past their prime but they still do some great music. The new guy got a lot of energy and the vocals are amazing!

I am currently listening to the new Journey CD and all I can say is “Steve who?” The new material is excellent, as well as the old Journey tunes. I have been a Journey fan since they first began making music and I found Arnel incredible and a better singer than Perry…even when singing the Journey classics. I have to disagree that they are past their prime. They sound great.
