DC5 Lead Singer Dies

By February 29, 2008

Follow me on:

Mike Smith was just a few days away from being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The former lead singer and keyboardist for Dave Clark Five has died of pneumonia at the age of 64.

The last few years had not been kind to Smith. In 2003, he suffered a severe spinal cord injury when he took a bad fall. That same year, his son died in a diving accident. He has been paralyzed since, and hospitalized until last December when he was moved into a specially equipped home near the hospital.

In spite of it all, he had hoped to be able to attend DC5's Rock Hall induction ceremony on March 10.

Although he was not an original member of the band, Smith became its most recognizable member, what Rolling Stone described as "a truly outstanding soul shouter."

And yet another sad day in the history of rock’n'roll with the passing of Mike Smith. I still have and listen to The DC 5 on 45rpm’s. The Rock’n'Roll Heaven has a NEW member. And I agree, this group should have been the The Hall years ago.

This is so sad to learn of the passing of Mike Smith. What makes it even sadder is it was so close to the DC5′s richly-deserved induction into the Rock Hall of Fame and that he will never be able to enjoy the accolades that go with the induction. A great talent, either with the DC5 or solo. He will be missed.

Mike was always one of my favorites, and hearing his name takes me back to those fun concerts of the 60′s. He was so respectful of the audience every time I saw him on stage, and seemed like a real gentleman — fun loving but genuine.
