Debut Album Takes 38 Years To Make
Before they were Heartbreakers, Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Tom Leadon and Randall Marsh were Mudcrutch. They were all the rage in their hometown of Gainesville, Florida, but their one and only national release, the single "Depot Street" in 1975, never charted.
Last summer, Petty, Campbell, Tench -- all of whom are still Heartbreakers -- got together with Leadon and Marsh to record Mudcrutch's first album, 38 years after the band was formed.
The aptly titled Mudcrutch will be released April 29, but you can go ahead and listen to one of the tracks, "Scare Easy" now, if you like.
Petty and the Heartbreakers will be touring (with Steve Winwood) this summer, but during the month of April Mudcrutch is playing a handful of "intimate" (translation: very small) venues in California, performing material from their somewhat belated debut album.
