About Faces

Tuesday July 22, 2008
Thumbnail history: when lead vocalist Steve Marriott left Small Faces to form Humble Pie, the remaining band members -- bassist Ronnie Lane, drummer Kenney Jones and keyboardist Ian McLagan -- reconstituted themselves as Faces, with the additions of vocalist Rod Stewart and guitarist Ronnie Wood (both from Jeff Beck Group.)

Faces released five albums between 1970 and 1974, and broke up in 1975 when Wood went off to join Rolling Stones and Stewart wanted to concentrate on a solo career. Jones eventually replaced Keith Moon as The Who's drummer and McLagan did some work with the Stones, then formed his own band. Lane died in 1997.

There was serious talk of a reunion of surviving Faces members in 2009, but those plans have fallen through.

The Faces reunion has been one of those on again, off again, maybe it will happen, maybe it won;t for so long. I honestly hope this could be the time it really happens. I’m sure the lads would still tear it up, even after all these years. I last saw the Faces in Frankfurt, Germany in the early 1970s. One of the best, most raucous r’n'r shows ever.

More recently, I finally got to see — and hang out a while with — Ian MacLagan. He sure as heck has still got that rock ‘n’ rollin’ spirit. Blimey, let’s hope this reunion happens. I’ll cancel everything to be there!

This is fifteen years too late, but better late than never. Ronnie Lane was the heart and sould of the band, and lord knows he could have used the money this tour/album would generate when he was in ill health. Mac, Kenny and Woody were always keen to try it; Stewart was always the “no” vote, once even bailing on rehearsals after agreeing in principle.

Maybe Glen Matlock on bass? I doubt Tetsu is up for the challenge – and it’s too late to nab Boz Burrell or Greg Ridley, either of whom would have been excellent choices.
