Some Rock Hall Inductees are Rock Artists

Thursday January 15, 2009
Here's something you don't see every day. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which regularly stocks itself with rap, jazz, r&b and country artists, has actually included a couple of rock artists among the group of 2009 inductees.

Jeff Beck, who was inducted in 1992 as a member of The Yardbirds (an actual rock band) is now being similarly recognized for his work as a solo artist. Longtime headbangers Metallica have also managed to defy the Rock Hall voters' indecipherable definition of rock to win inclusion.

As usual, the majority of this year's inductees are artists from genres other than rock: Run-DMC, Bobby Womack, and Little Anthony & The Imperials -- outstanding artists all, but rockers? Not so much.

For the first time in 12 years, the April 4 induction ceremony won't be in New York City, but in Cleveland, where the Rock Hall Museum is located. Another first: tickets will be available to the public, in case the public wish to pay $35 or $75 to see more non-rock artists inducted into the Rock Hall.

As always, your comments are welcome.

For the love of God, when are these people at the R&R Hall going to start inducting R&R artists that should have been elected years ago? I got so angry, I contacted the Hall to find out how the voting process works. I couldn’t believe it when they told me. Over 750 journalists across the nation cast their vote. Hey folks!!!! What happened to Jethro Tull, The Doobies and Yes???

I am beginning to get a bit angered by the lack of prominent R&R artists noticably gone from the list. It’s like they never existed. What happened to Jethro Tull, The Doobie Brothers and Yes? All of these folks should have been in the Hall years ago!!!

We have Jann Wenner’s Rock & Roll Hall of Shame and it’s located in Cleveland, OH. Trust me, it’s a shame to try and pass this place off to the American public as a real Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. If you weren’t one of Jann Wenner favorite bands, or if you weren’t on his record label or if you made the folks mad at Rolling Stone Magazineback in the day, then you won’t be inducted into Jann Wenner Rock & Roll Hall of Shame! Jeff asked were are Jethro Tull, The Dobbie Brothers and Yes. I ask, where’s Steppenwolf, Grand Funk Railroad, Kiss and the Guess Who? It’s a shame and I for one will not support this hall of shame!

Metallica wouldn’t be here without Judas Priest, Iron Maiden or Deep Purple and their associated bands.

Can anyone say Moody Blues??? At this rate The Rasmus will make the Rock Hall first.

I’m born, raised in the Rock and Roll capitol of the world, Cleveland, and have worked in the entertainment industry for 30- years. I even have my name on an I-Beam in the Rock Hall. Clevelanders would love to take the Rock Hall back by Eminent Domain! If we had our way, NY decisions would be gone and we would induct 100 artists per year just to catch up.

The snob board in NY is out of touch with what needs to be done and what the people see. No band should get in before those bands who have been up for induction get into the Rock Hall.

This Rock Hall was founded for all Rock Bands and NO ONE should be over looked, or out right denied.

On Sept 10th 2001, fox news exposed the board in NY for unfair practices on electing inductees, but sorry to say that news bit got lost the next day.

Unfortunately this comment is NOT an opinion but fact.

I agree that the Hall of Fame has becme a sham. There are so many acts that have been overlooked for inclusion, as well as many that have been included without merit. However, there are two groups that for some reason are not discussed often as worthy of Hall status: Three Dog Night and the Spinners. Three Dog Night was arguably the biggest band in he world for a couple of years in the early 70s. And the Spinners, in my opinion, epitomized the Philly soul sound more than any other group, including the O’Jays. Certainly, these two groups belong in the Hall!

I’m kind of disappointed that Lawrence Welk didn’t make the cut this year.

Run DMC got in and Iggy and the Stooges didn’t? HERESY! Blasphemy!! and they’re gonna charge $35 to 75 bucks for tickets?

Simply agree that the so-called Hall of the Rock’n'roll has turned for a long time already to similarity of peripheral restaurant. There come not those who really deserves act, but there come acquaintances and acquaintances of acquaintances of the owner of that institution. Therefore it is not necessary to extend news reports about the given event. And hotly to discuss it. Let advertise itself for money. And in such “information” material should be specified “as advertising”.

Great comments…ALL of ‘em!
Metallica inducted before Grand Funk Railroad? Certain bands already inducted through the Wenner political machinery wouldn’t be bands at all without the Gran daddies of classic Rock like GFR and YES…ect.
I’m with Cleveland…take the Hall of Lame back by Eminent Domain! Add 100 bands per year to make the museum the real thing! I’ll bring Toledo with me and the NY decision makers can bark at the moon!

(12) TIM WILLS says:

That is an excellent list. What about Chicago as a representation of jazz rock? With their record sales and groundbreaking early sound, they should be in easily.

The Moody Blues should have been in years ago!
Some real serious omissions in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.
What is going on?

(14) Bob says:

What about the J.Geils Band? They played to sold out hockey barns everywhere in the 70’s and 80’s and they can’t get in there?
The whole process is a joke.

(15) Doug, Progression magazine says:

Tim,
You are right- I forgot about CHICAGO on my list. I mention them each year but forgot this time! They are still rocking after 42 years, 20 Top 10 singles and over 120 million in album/single/CD sales…

And let’s not forget about HEART. Well deserving to be in the Hall after 37 years, 21 Top 40 singles and over 30 million in sales. Their 70s concerts were amazing and they still rock today.

Like the recent election, the R&R HOF is just a popularity contest on par with American (sic) Idol. AI participants will probably get in before those bands that laid the foundation of Rock and Roll. With the list of deserving bands growing every year, it seems the nominating commitee has selective memory, as it’s blatant omission of the many REAL Rock Bands constantly ticks everyone off without a way of voicing complaints directly. I know the current voters are industry veterans, but this is not the Pentagon, so open it up more and let the public have a say in this. Seems to me the popular vote should have a bearing somewhat, that’s all modern socitey gives a hoot about anyway, what with all the dufuss TV programs like the Dancing, Talent, Idol, Surviving, etc. It’s like everything is just fluff, without substance. I know there are talented people throughout that should be recognized, but with the saturation of media hype today, IMO, it all sucks! Rant concluded!

Until BLUE OYSTER CULT is inducted I am boycotting all R&RHOF functions. BUCK DHARMA is one the most respected guitarists ever, his peers are most complementary when his name comes up in conversation, and with BOC’s stellar catalog of music being his/their resume (give Dominance and Submission a listen), it’s why everyone knows it’s ON YOUR FEET, OR ON YOUR KNEES!!!!! Now that’s ROCK AND ROLL!

(17) Rick says:

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is little more than a JOKE! It should be renamed the Hall of Shame. Without even taking a deep breath, I can think of at least 20 artists who are rockers – not rappers – who should be in there. Have they ever heard of The Moody Blues, The Guess Who, The Hollies, and I’ll even go so far as to say Tommy James and The Shondells (8 gold albums, countless No. 1’s), Jack Scott and on and on? I’m surprised the Beatles are even in there, ditto Elvis. At least they don’t have to worry about my ever going there – it would be a waste of time and money until influential artists are inducted. Maybe next year they’ll induct KC and the Sunshine Band!!

(18) Tony says:

I think the rock hall is a total joke. I think that groups like ELO and Moodey Blues and ELP should have been in there a long long time ago. But instead they induct country and rap artist that are not even considered Rock and Roll? What a total joke the whole rock hall of fame is. I am from Cleveland and have lived here for many many years and have not ever been to the rock hall due to this totally ridiculous induction of artist and groups that have absolutely nothing to do with rock and roll. These country acts and singers along with the others that are not rock and roll performers should go into their own hall of fame and let the rock hall be for true rock and roll acts and artist hence the name rock and roll. I mean you do not see that many rock artist and band members in the country music hall of fame right? What a joke the rock hall is totally shameful. No wonder some acts could care less if they are inducted into that nonsense.
