Is he or isn't he?
Australia's
Undercover.com is reporting that drummer Charlie Watts has played his last set with
Rolling Stones. An unnamed "source within the Stones inner circle" is quoted as saying that Watts will no longer record or tour with the band of which he has been a member since 1963.
It didn't take long for a Stones spokesperson to issue a statement calling the report a "fabricated story" and saying that "Charlie Watts has not left the Rolling Stones."
Perhaps, as is popular among politicians, the statement is "nuanced" in such a way that it could be taken to mean that he hasn't left "yet." My problem with it is that while I'm not a fan of unnamed sources, Undercover.com has a reputation for credibility, and I have trouble believing that they just made up a story like that on a whim.
Another thing that lends credence to the story is the fact that Watts has never really cared much for rock band life, and reportedly had to be persuaded to go on the band's 2005-07 A Bigger Bang tour.
It isn't likely that we'll be hearing from the reclusive Mr. Watts himself so, for now, we'll just have to wait and watch.
