From 1968 until 2002 keyboardist
Jon Lord was one of the few constants in a Deep Purple lineup that has had nearly as many (11) lead vocalists, lead guitarists and bassists rotate through their lineup as they've had (18) studio album releases. Lord died Monday (7/16) at a London hospital, 10 years after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer forced him to retire.
Lord, who studied classical piano in his youth, embraced rock passionately. He once defended Deep Purple's music (
per The Telegraph) as being "as valid as anything by Beethoven."
Lord joined Whitesnake in 1978, after Deep Purple split up in 1976, returning to the band he had co-founded when DP re-formed in 1984.
