The summer of 2012 brings mixed memories for Pink Floyd. July 7 was the 6th anniversary of the death of Syd Barrett, the troubled creative force behind the band's landmark debut album,
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
With the 45th anniversary of the album, we're reminded of the short life (but long tail) of Barrett's influence on psychedelic rock, and on the career of the band who were one its first practitioners.
Nine albums later, and two years after the phenomenal success of
The Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd released what two of its members said was their favorite of all the group's albums. But when they went into the studio in early 1975 to begin recording, they had no idea what they were going to record.
