Review: Paul McCartney and Wings - 'Rockshow'

By July 11, 2013

Follow me on:

The last time you could see this concert video was when it was released on home video on the long extinct Betamax format in 1981, or in movie theaters the year before. The film was shot during the US leg of the Wings world tour in 1976. Most of the songs on the video were heard on the only live Wings album made, Wings Over America, a 27-song 3-LP package released at the end of 1976.

Four years would pass before Rockshow was produced and released, and another 33 years until it was released on DVD and Blu-ray back in June. The original film was restored, the audio was remastered, and several songs that had not been included in the original video were added, making this the first time all of the songs on the tour set list can be seen.

Having heard the album many times, but having never seen the film, I was especially interested in seeing Rockshow. As you might expect, it's an entirely different experience, decidedly much more like actually being there (with a couple of minor exceptions.)
