Battle In The Bowery
So, what is it about a cramped, aging nightclub in the Bowery district of Manhattan that has Classic Rockers like Debbie Harry (Blondie), Tommy Ramone (The Ramones) and Little Steven Van Zandt (E Street Band) throwing their high-profile support behind the club in a rent dispute with its landlord? In the mid-70s, CBGB was ground zero for the Punk Rock movement, and launched the careers of Blondie, The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Talking Heads, Pearl Jam, and many others. The club’s lease runs out at the end of the month (August 31) and negotiations aren’t going well. In fact, the club has established a Save CBGB website to gather even more support in its bid to stay put.
