Rock This

Friday April 11, 2008

This week it was hard to stay out of the way of the Rolling Stones. The new Martin Scorsese film about the Stones, Shine A Light is now playing in theaters near most of us, with soundtrack now available on your music medium of choice. And if, after all that, you're still jonesing for some Stones, you can avail yourself of the band's new YouTube offering, humbly titled Living Legends, where we're invited to upload our "burning questions" on video. Whatever.

Rush, celebrating anniversary number 40 this year, said to be contemplating a new studio album sometime next year. Guitarist Alex Lifeson says the band will have to get some rest after they finish their current tour later this year, and won't be ready to work on new material until maybe spring of '09. Recorded during the first leg of the tour, Snakes And Arrows Live will be released next week (April 15). Lead singer Geddy Lee, meanwhile, will be on a new children's CD coming in May from Barenaked Ladies. Other guests on Snack Time are an eclectic mix that includes Lyle Lovett, Gordon Lightfoot and Sarah McLachlan.

Some interesting new stuff coming out: Flo & Eddie (Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan of The Turtles) are reissuing their catalog, including a couple of their albums that haven't been available on CD before. Half of Steely Dan, Walter Becker will release a new solo album in June. Before Circus Money, his last solo release was in 1994. Steve Miller Band has sold more than 25-million albums since 1968, but has yet to release a DVD. That changes on May 20 with a two-DVD + CD set, Live From Chicago, the concert portion of which will air in June on PBS.
