A Beatles Reunion (and other miracles of modern alchemy)

Wednesday June 25, 2008
This is about as close as we'll ever get to a reunion of The Beatles. It is Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono, Olivia Harrison and George Martin working side by side on the remix of Beatles music for the Cirque de Soleil production of Love. A new film called All Together Now documents the surviving Beatles, their producer, and the widows of their late bandmates, all getting along remarkably well together. There have been a few public showings, but the primary venue for the film will be an upcoming DVD release.

Vinyl On CD
Here's something you don't see every day. Buy the vinyl LP version of the recent release by Mudcrutch (Tom Petty's original band reunited) and you'll get a CD containing the LP mix of the album. This is different from a "regular" CD, which is mixed so that everything comes out at more or less the same volume. A New York Times writer who listened to the LP mix on CD noted a considerable difference between it and the mass release CD. "On a reasonable stereo," writes Robert Levine, "the drums hit harder, because they’re much louder than the other sounds, and the vocals jump out." Audio purists take note.

We Hear You Knocking, But You Can't Come In
The US government, in its infinite wisdom, has denied a visa sought by Boy George, who was planning a North American tour this summer. Stated reason: because our Boy goes on trial in Britain this fall on charges of falsely imprisoning someone. Some (including the artist himself) are missing the connection between one and the other, but the tour has been canceled as a result. BG (aka George O'Dowd) ran afoul of US authorities a couple of years ago when he filed a false police report about a break-in at his New York home. Oh, Boy.
