The band was formed in 1969 in Birmingham, England and established itself as a pioneer of the heavy metal genre. The band underwent numerous personnel changes beginning with the departure of Ozzy Osbourne in 1979. Osbourne rejoined the band in 1997 and continues to perform today with the other founding members, bassist Geezer Butler, guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward.
