The Doors

Classic Classic Rock

From Dave White, About.com

Oliver Stone's 1991 feature film, The Doors left little doubt about the band's importance in the history of rock.

From its formation in 1965 until the death of its young lead vocalist, Jim Morrison in 1971, The Doors maintained a degree of popularity that never wavered, even in the face of the Beatles-led British Invasion.

The band -- Morrison especially -- were often described as rebels, but their music resonanted with a large audience drawn to its serious lyrics and unique blend of musical styles.
