• Keyboardist Rick Wright, who left the band in 1979 in a dispute with Roger Waters, signed on to work with David Gilmour and Nick Mason on the album and tour for A Momentary Lapse of Reason
• Unlike albums in the Waters era, this was not a concept album, but a more conventional collection of unrelated works, much as it had been in the Syd Barrett era. Gilmour was principal songwriter and lead vocalist.
• The album outsold The Final Cut and the U.S. tour supporting it was the year's highest grossing. Two of the five single releases, "Learning to Fly" and "On the Turning Away" made it to #1 in the US. "One Slip" peaked at #5. "Sorrow" and "The Dogs of War" made it to #36 and #30 respectively.
