Atom Heart Mother

Studio album released October 2, 1970

From its cover to its nearly 24-minute title track (featuring horns and a choir) the band's fifth album was an effort to explore a variety of musical styles.

Chart peaks: U.K. #1 / U.S. #55 (certified Gold)

• The album title came from a newspaper headline about a woman who was to receive an atomic powered pacemaker. Like the album cover image, it purposely had absolutely nothing to do with the content of the album.

• The title track took up one entire side of the album. The flip side, like Ummagumma, consisted of unrelated tracks written by band members.

• In a 1985 interview with the syndicated radio show, Rock Over London, Roger Waters said the album was "a good case, I think, for being thrown into the dustbin and never listened to by anyone ever again. It was pretty kind of pompous, it wasn't really about anything."
