Concert Review - John Waite

Sterling Fest - August 5, 2006

From Alun Williams, for About.com

No Brakes Records
John Waite returned to Detroit the first weekend in August to play Sterling Fest, a free festival in suburban Sterling Heights. The last time he played here was about two years ago, in an unplugged gig organized by a now (sadly) defunct radio station, 106.7 The Drive. That gig was simply John and guitarist who also helped with vocal harmonies, playing for a crowd of about 200. This time, it was more like 5,000. But hey, who’s counting? It was a fun night!

Well, being English like John, I thought I proudly wear my England Football / Soccer shirt. Both my wife Rhonda and I are JW fans and like to jam "Head First" and "Back on My Feet Again" from time to time in the bands we get to hook up with locally.

It's good to see JW playing live again, although opening with "When I See You Smile" surprised me. It was great, but I thought he would've saved that for later.

There was no holding back with other familiar numbers like "Change" and "Back on My Feet Again," a true classic from The Babys years. "Missing You" followed. What a great song, and a huge hit.

He introduced the band before going into "Bluebird Cafe" and then the title track of his most recent album, "The Hard Way" then "NYC Girl." Great stuff!

The crowd really got behind him on "Midnight Rendezvous." The set ended with "Head First," then a killer version of Led Zep's "Rock and Roll" for an encore.

Welcome back, John. Don't be shy about visiting again soon!
