Grateful Dead Fillmore West 1969 (Rhino Records)

In the winter of 1969, the Grateful Dead were busy breaking entirely new ground in the way rock music was performed. Their improvisational performance style grew out of a San Francisco rock music culture that bred experimentation and innovation.

For four nights, February 27 to March 2 of that year, the Dead performed at one of the favorite venues of '60s rockers, San Francisco's Fillmore West. Performances were culled from those concerts for the Dead's classic Live/Dead album.

Much of what didn't make it on that album can now be heard on a three-CD set, Fillmore West 1969 from Rhino Records.

Among the previously unreleased material:

  • Performances of "Dark Star," "St. Stephen," "The Eleven," and "Death Don't Have No Mercy."
  • An extended jam on "Alligator" and "Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)"
  • The complete "We Bid You Goodnight," which was incomplete on the Live/Dead album
The package also includes a 72-page book of photos, liner notes, and a new essay by Dead biographer, Dennis McNally.
