WFUV Remembers John Lennon

New York, NY—Noncommercial public radio station WFUV will remember John Lennon throughout the day on Thursday, December 8, the 25th anniversary of Lennon’s death. The station will play Lennon songs every hour and air several special features and programs in tribute to the late Beatle.

Thursday, December 8

WFUV can be heard on 90.7 FM in New York City and around the world on the Internet at www.wfuv.org. A schedule of the day’s programs follows:

6:00-10:00 AM: City Folk Morning with hosts Claudia Marshall and Julianne Welby includes:

  • Thoughts from the Imagine mosaic at Strawberry Fields, where visitors from around the world reflect on the day they heard about John Lennon's murder and what it means to them.
  • City Folk Morning book critic Bob Minzesheimer reviews a few of the many Lennon titles that have turned up in book stores this season.
  • Reflections from WFUV hosts on the 25th anniversary of Lennon’s death.
2:00-6:00 PM: City Folk Afternoon with host Dennis Elsas includes:
  • Airchecks of Liverpool radio stations breaking the news of Lennon's death
  • Soundbite of Howard Cosell announcing John's death during Monday Night Football
  • Montage of WNEW-FM's coverage the night of December 8, 1980, anchored by Vin Scelsa (now heard Saturday nights 8 PM-midnight on WFUV)
  • Highlights of Dennis' interview with Cynthia Lennon Recent "man on the street" comments about Lennon recorded in Liverpool
10:00 PM: John Ono Lennon with host Lynn Neary of NPR includes:
  • "On Ed Sullivan"—an audio essay by host Lynn Neary, with Beatles live performances and 1963-64 fanclub Christmas messages.
  • "All We Are Saying" by Barrett Golding—Lennon, in his own words and music, talks about peace, family and art.
  • "The Day John Lennon Died" by Paul Ingles— Members of the generation jolted by Lennon's death recall how they heard the news and how deeply this ex-Beatle's life affected theirs.
11:00 PM: The World Cafe features a visit with journalist Larry Kane about his new book "Lennon Revealed." Kane was the only American journalist who was allowed to travel with the Beatles during their 1964-65 tour of America.
