Robert Frederick Xenon Geldof worked in a slaughterhouse, on a highway crew and in a cannery before becoming a writer for a music publication in Canada. He returned to Ireland in 1975 to become lead singer of the punk group, Boomtown Rats.
Irish Roots:
Born in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin in 1951.
As the Rats' success was fading in the mid-80s, Geldof became concerned about famine in Ethiopia, and recorded a song about it to raise relief money. He has continued those efforts since, most notably with the 1985 Live Aid benefit and 2005's Live 8 concerts. He tried to launch an acting career, his chief claim to fame being playing the role of Pink in the film version of Pink Floyd's The Wall.
