Top 8 Classic Rock DVDs of 2006

By Dave White, About.com

Some notable new performances and some archival treasures were among the classic rock DVDs released in 2006.

The range is diverse: Paul McCartney's 2005 concert tour; Blind Faith's only filmed performance and some of Velvet Underground's last; Grateful Dead on late night TV.

If you like to watch your rock while you listen, read on.

1. Paul McCartney - The Space Within US

In September 2005 Paul McCartney set out on a sold-out 34-date tour, nearly 50 years after he first started playing little clubs in Liverpool with John Lennon and George Harrison. McCartney's 2005 tour, and his role as a pop culture icon, are documented in a new concert film, Paul McCartney: The Space Within US.

2. Pink Floyd - Pulse

The on-again, off-again release of the DVD version of Pink Floyd’s Pulse, the two-disc set contains a restored, re-edited, re-mastered version of the video (originally released on VHS in 1995) of Floyd’s 1994 Division Bell tour, including the first ever filmed performance of Dark Side of the Moon. Bonus goodies include some of the screen films used during their concert performances in the ‘70s, backstage and other behind-the-scenes footage.

3. Styx - One With Everything

One of the more interesting collaborations in recent memory finds classic rockers Styx teaming up with Cleveland's Contemporary Youth Orchestra: 115 musicians and 56 vocalists, all of them teenagers. One With Everything: Styx & the Contemporary Youth Orchestra was recorded during a live performance in May 2006 at Cleveland's Blossom Music Center.

4. Grateful Dead - The Tomorrow Show

Between 1979 and 1981, NBC's then late late show, The Tomorrow Show with host Tom Snyder devoted four shows to the subject of drug experimentation in the 60s. The high point (no pun intended) came in May 1981 when the Grateful Dead appeared, chatted, and performed. It's all documented on the The Tomorrow Show: Tom Snyder's Electric Kool-Aid Talk Show.

5. Cream - Classic Artists

Vintage performance footage (much of it never before released) and new interviews with Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker document the career of rock's first "supergroup," including their 1966-1968 career and 2005 reunion.

6. Blind Faith - London Hyde Park 1969

Its founders (Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker and Rick Grech) considered Blind Faith more a tentative experiment than a supergroup. But the mystique of music by famous members of other famous bands makes the only Blind Faith performance ever filmed an essential part of classic rock history.

7. David Gilmour - On an Island (Limited Edition)

This edition of the ex-Pink Floyd front man's new solo album includes a DVD with video of live performances and studio sessions, with material from On an Island and classic Pink Floyd songs.

8. Velvet Underground - Velvet Redux: Live MCMXCII

Say what you will about Velvet Underground, the band broke some serious ground in experimental rock in the late '60s and early '70s. They may not have a long discography or a fortune in royalties (though they do have a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) but their influence on everything from punk to noise rock is legend. In a sense, VU pays tribute to itself with Velvet Redux: Live MCMXCII, which includes some of the band's last live performances.
