New this month - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Steve Miller Band, Foghat, Lynyrd Skynyrd ... and that's just for starters!
1. Molly Hatchet - 'Justice'
Release date June 1, 2010 / Steamhammer Records / CD, LP, MP3
Although guitarist/songwriter Dave Hlubek is the only original member of Molly Hatchet still in the lineup, the band continues a southern rock tradition that began in 1975. Justice is their 13th studio release. The title establishes the lyrical theme of the album. Proceeds from the sale of the single, "Fly on Wings of Angels (Somer's Song)" go to a non-profit foundation that aids families of victims of child abduction.
2. Foghat - 'Last Train Home'
Release date June 15, 2010 / Ingrooves Records / CD, MP3
Foghat explore their blues roots (their first hit single in 1972 was a cover of the '50s blues standard, "I Just Want To Make Love To You") with the June 15 release of Last Train Home, their 15th studio album, and their first since 2003's Family Joules. Listen to "Born for the Road" from the new release.
3. Devo - 'Something for Everybody'
Release date: June 15, 2010 / Warner Bros / CD
Devo's first new studio album since 1990 purports to have Something for Everybody. Though much has changed since the band first asked and answered,Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! in 1978, some things remain unchanged. Says bassist/songwriter Roger Casale, "We're not the guys who freak people out and scare them - we're like the house band on the Titanic, entertaining everybody as we go down."
4. Steve Cropper & Felix Cavaliere - 'Midnight Flyer'
Release date: June 15, 2010 / Stax Records / CD
Classic rock veterans Steve Cropper (Booker T. & the MGs) and Felix Cavaliere (The Young Rascals) first teamed up in 2008 for Nudge It Up A Notch. They're back with Midnight Flyer, which Cropper summed up this way in the album release announcement: "Felix and I come from pretty much the same musical school — but from different geographical locations. He’s a Jersey boy at heart, and I grew up in Memphis, but when soul meets soul, what can you say? There are no borders. There are no boundaries."
5. Steve Miller Band - 'Bingo!'
Release date: June 15, 2010 / Roadrunner Records / CD
There hasn't been a new release from Steve Miller Band since 1993, so the release of Bingo! ends a long dry spell for SMB fans. Billed as "a true return to Miller's roots [which] echoes his early years in the Chicago music scene," the release is the first of two parts. Look for the second installment in 2011.
6. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - 'Mojo'
Release date: June 15, 2010 / Reprise Records / CD, LP, Blu-ray audio
"With this album," says Tom Petty, "I want to show other people what I hear with the band. Mojo is where the band lives when it's playing for itself." It is, in fact, Petty and The Heartbreakers in the same room at the same time performing "live to tape" with nothing dubbed in later. As with most of their albums, this one is a stylistic stew of rock, blues, country, and reggae. The album is the 12th from Petty and the Heartbreakers.
7. Uriah Heep - 'Live at Sweden Rock Festival 2009'
Release date June 15, 2010 / earMusic / CD
Mick Box, who has been Uriah Heep's lead guitarist since the band formed in 1969, thinks as much about the band's future as its past. "There's a lot happening [in the music industry]," he said in a 2009 About.com Classic Rock interview. "You just have to be aware of it and keep on top of it and find your niche." Heep's niche is a blend of hard rock, heavy metal, and progressive rock, at which they excel in live performance, like this one, which was recorded Live at the Sweden Rock Festival 2009.
8. Lynyrd Skynyrd - 'Live From Freedom Hall'
Release date June 22, 2010 / Roadrunner Records / CD-DVD
One of rock's most durable bands, Lynyrd Skynyrd go "lyve" once again in this CD-DVD set. This Louisville, Kentucky concert was one of the last to be recorded before the deaths of keyboardist Billy Powell and bassist Ean Evans in 2009. The band is currently touring in support of their 2009 album, God and Guns, but Live From Freedom Hall is all about Skynyrd signature classics like "Gimme Three Steps", "Call Me The Breeze", "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird".
9. Ozzy Osbourne - 'Scream'
Release date June 22, 2010 / Epic Records / CD
Ozzy Osbourne's 10th solo studio album, Scream was originally to be titled Soul Sucka, but the name was changed after fans raised a fuss. The single, "Let Me Hear You Scream" got as high as #5 on Billboard's Rock Songs chart, and was featured in a recent episode of CSI: New York.
10. Dweezil Zappa - 'Return of the Son of ...'
Release date June 22, 2010 / Razor & Tie Records / CD
Frank Zappa broke a lot of boundaries between musical genres during a long (30 years) and prolific (87 albums) career that ended with his death in 1994. Since then, Zappa's son, Dweezil, who was born the year his father's sixth and seventh albums were released (1969) has done much to keep the legacy alive. Return of the Son of ... a two-CD package of the younger Zappa's live performances of his father's work over the past two years, in New York, Chicago and the UK.
