The point your guest writer makes about going to thrift stores and it being hit or miss is dead on. You have to have the misses to have the hits, though.
There’s this one thrift store I went to over and over and I saw the same (terrible) classical music, show tunes and Christmas albums. One time, though, I managed to pick up the entire (Peter Gabriel era) Genesis catalogue in one trip. It was totally worth all the misses.
I feel like I only leave comments about Genesis here. I really do like other classic rock bands : )
It’s okay to play favorites here, Matt {;>)
As both you and the author (Robert Benson) point out, the “thrill of the chase” is as much a part of the enjoyment as finding the hidden gems.
But, yeah. You have to wade through a lot of Perry Como to get to the Peter Gabriel.
Hi Matt;
Thanks for your comment, it is appreciated. Another tip is to get to know the people and ask when they put their new donations out. I have a “Good As New Shop” in the next small town and they put out “new” merchandise on Wednesday’s and I am there every week. I even have a “connection”,(actually a very nice lady) that will call when they get in vinyl (but I don’t get “dibs” on it, I have to show up every Wednesday). And Wednesday, I’m there!
I once picked up over 100 albums at a St. Vincent DePaul shop, they had just put the collection out and I grabbed it! But, that is a one in 300 chance and being at the right place at the right time. And Dave brings up a very important point-the hunt; and that is the most fun for me.
Regards
Robert
