The ups and downs of Leslie West

Leslie West has weathered plenty of good times and bad in his personal and professional lives. There have been good things like scoring a gig at Woodstock before his newly formed band, Mountain had recorded an album, or even performed live together more than three times. And then there was his 2009 marriage to Jenni Marurer. The 15,000 folks who had just watched his Woodstock 40th anniversary performance stayed to be a part of their wedding ceremony, on stage, as soon as the performance ended.

But there have been bad times, too. The heavy drug use that ultimately led to Mountain's breakup, and that of his next band, West, Bruce & Laing. He has had to deal with diabetes, and with the complications from it that resulted in a partial leg amputation in 2011.

Times are on the upswing again. The amputation had made West worry that he wouldn't be able to do any more live performing, but within a couple of months, he was doing just that, and has continued to do so since. Now, his 15th solo album, Still Climbing has been completed, and is ready for release in late October.

On the occasion of the album release announcement, and the 44th anniversary of Woodstock this week, we take a look at how Leslie West got where he is today.
