Preview: The US vs. John Lennon: Motion Picture Soundtrack CD

Thursday September 21, 2006
Coming soon (if it hasn't already) to a theater near you -- The US vs. John Lennon. Coming along with it, the movie’s soundtrack, a 20-track compendium of Lennon’s solo career, including two previously unreleased performances.

The film documents Lennon's evolution, between 1966 and 1976, from Beatle to solo artist to social activist. Yoko Ono Lennon, who wrote the soundtrack’s liner notes, says, "Never in a million years, did we think that promoting World Peace could be dangerous. Were we naive? Yes, on that account, we were. John sings: 'Nobody told me there’d be days like these.' That was his true confession. These songs have become relevant all over again. It’s almost as if John wrote these songs for what we are going through now."

The new tracks are a 1971 live version of "Attica State" and an instrumental version of "How Do You Sleep." In keeping with the documentary’s theme, other featured tracks reflect Lennon’s antiwar activism with songs like "Imagine," "Give Peace a Chance" and "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)." As the film documents, it was this activism that brought Lennon under the scrutiny of the Nixon administration and the FBI.

The US vs. John Lennon: Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available in stores and for digital download on September 26. The film opened in New York and Los Angeles on September 15 and will be seen elsewhere by the end of the month.
