Surf Rock

By Dave White, About.com

Dick Dale and the Del-Tones set the stage for Surf Rock.

Definition: Much of it is instrumental, featuring electric guitars with heavy reverb. In vocals, themes tended toward surf, sun, and bikinis. The genre spawned several sub-genres, including Surfabilly (surf themes with a rockabilly chord structure) and Hot Rod or Drag Rock (the Surf Rock sound applied to car-themed lyrics).
Examples:
The Surfaris, Dick Dale, The Beach Boys, Jan & Dean
